We ask the parents register their child at least 2 months before the desired baptism date. The Baptism Date is the date the family would like but must first be approved by the Priest before any other arrangements be made. Both parents need to come and sign the Registration Form (Form A). The child’s Birth Certificate must be brought in for verification of data. Children may be baptized from birth up to 6 years of age. Once they are 7 years old they must complete religious education classes as preparation for the Sacrament of Baptism
Requirements for the Parents Only the parent or legal guardian of the child can register them for Baptism (Form A). If one parent is not Catholic, he or she must agree to the Catholic Baptism and also agree to a Catholic upbringing. This is true even if parents are separated. It is expected that there be a reasonable assurance that the parents intend to educate the child in the Catholic Faith, otherwise, it is not possible to baptize the child. If both parent’s names appear on the birth certificate it is required that both parents sign the application and/or proof of sole custody be presented. Copy of Photo ID must be presented to verify information on Birth Certificate.
Requirements for the Godparents The Godparents Requirement Form (Form B) must be complete and signed before reserving the Date. The Godparents must be Catholic, 16 years of age or older, have completed all sacraments and if married they must be married through the Catholic Church; they cannot live in common law or be cohabitating (CANON LAW 874: §1). Required one, Maximum two. If two, one man and one woman. Must be present for Baptism. Copy of Photo ID must be presented to verify information on Form B.
Requirements for the Preparation Classes It is required that both parents and godparents attend a Baptism Classes. If they do not live in the area, a proof of classes attendance is required. If they have attended Baptism Classes within the past two years, they can bring proof of dated certificate and will no longer need another Baptism Class. Classes are to be taken prior to the Baptism; otherwise, the baptism is cancelled or postponed. Any proof should be in the office 1 week prior to the Baptism.
